CAMP ASCCA ~ 2011

By Sylvia Bern

What a joy! So many improvements have been made on the campus. We took a long walk around the lake where foliage has been cleared and benches placed so people can sit and rest-beautiful! We played putt-putt golf and watched children come down the huge water slide.

The big contest this year was "Banana Olympics", very very funny! Our dressed up banana was managed by George Dethlefs and Ron Kaderly. Great job! However, the Autism kids won the prize.

Three young people from that group played the piano at our chapel service- Elizabeth, Abigail and Matthew Denton, We loved having them. They were a blessing.

We made a donation of sheets and pillow cases to camp. They are always needed.

Thanks ASCCA and Goodwill Easter Seals. We had a ball!

Notes from the MAPPSG Meetings

APRIL 2011 Meeting ~ Sylvia Bern Reporting

We welcomed a first time visitor, Ethel Moulds, to the April meeting. She asked many questions about post-polio so we tried to answer them according to personal experience. Ethel is one of those survivors who received no treatment as a child. Consequently, she has orthopedic issues which need to be addressed. Patsy gave her our "info package" including Dr Peach's address. We encouraged her to be evaluated at his clinic.
Members were reminded to submit ideas and info for our meetings as well as items for the Newsletter.
Attending: Patsy Adams ~ Sylvia Bern ~ Charles Gollott ~ Ethel Moulds ~ Clara Norsworthy ~ George Norsworthy ~ Ed Weller.

MAY 2011 Meeting ~ Sylvia Bern Reporting

Our guest at the May meeting was Mr. James Roberson from the Area Agency on Aging. He spoke to us about various programs available for seniors which concern health care and wellness. Mr. Roberson provided handouts and an overview about each one.

  1. Medicare Basics
  2. Help with free medications
  3. Ombudsman- Protecting citizens in nursing homes and assisted living facilities.
  4. Medicaid Waiver Program
  5. SHIP- Alabama State Health Insurance Assistance. Free help for people with MEDICARE.
  6. Free Benefits CheckUp- older adults and persons with disabilities who are eligible for public and private benefits, but are NOT receiving them. Contact Tarsha Lewis or Emily Martin 1-800-243-5463/. 433-6541. Online www.BenefitsCheckUp.org/SARPC..
  7. SAIL Centers and workshops for seniors
All good info. Pass it on to other people. Thanks Mr. Roberson! We enjoyed your presentation.

JUNE 2011 Meeting ~ Sylvia Bern Reporting

We talked about making plans for the future as we age. Mr. Roberson had told us in May that there would be changes in Medicare, so we must be vigilant and note all those items that directly affect persons with disabilities.
We will need some assistance as we lose muscle strength and tire more easily.Because of falls, we should consider signing up for EMERGENCY help- a call device worn like a necklace, especially if one lives alone. Future plans also include assessment of assets, making wills, and burial arrangements.
Sometimes people don' t think about these things or put off making decisions, but talking about them in a group may "prompt" appropriate action.
JULY 23rd our Anniversary ~ Come celebrate ~ Meet our guest

APRIL 2011 Meeting ~ Leigh Dethlefs Reporting

Our April meetings was busy discussing our pending trip to Camp Assca. We were hoping everyone could come that signed up. Also discussed braces and appointments with Danny Eddins at Pensacola Orthotic & Prosthetic Specialties. He really knows his stuff and has helped out several of us with brace problems. We hope he does well with his new shop.

MAY 2011 Meeting ~ Leigh Dethlefs Reporting

Our May meeting was talking about camp and looking at pictures from Camp Assca. We had a great time. Eight people were able to make it and we all felt refreshed and grateful that we had another year to celebrate who we are and how we a handling life in our later years of post-polio. We had new experiences with activities this year. No bad George did not have to wear a dress this year. He and Ron Kaderly had a relationship with a banana. You have to be there to understand. New development for NASCAR fans. They now have a big screen TV in the dinning hall and played the race that was on for that Saturday. Church on Sunday was special with piano and prayer. We hope to go again next year, so think and plan ahead. You will love it.

It was a beautiful day and a great turn out for our June meeting.
Jim and Shirley Neil and George and Clara Norsworthy had been to their high school class reunions in Tennessee and Mississippi.
Laura Hust, Assistant FAAST Program Coordinator with Center for Independent Living was our guest speaker. She handed out information to help people with different disabilities get ready for hurricane season. They provide such services as Individual and Systems Advocacy, Referrals, Independent Living Skills and Peer Counseling. They loan out equipment short and long term, refurbish lifts and power wheelchairs as available. They provide free telephone for the hard of hearing and many other services to help us live more independent lives. Laura was very informative and we enjoyed her program. They are there for us.
We always miss those absent from meetings.Hope to see everyone JULY 16.
