KEEPING MAYBERRY IN OUR FUTURE

Larry Ready reports
on The International Association of Official Human Rights Agencies Annual Meeting

Think about Mayberry, North Carolina! You might remember that after school Opie would drop in on his father at the Court House, and Andy could walk home for lunch. Each citizen knew all of their neighbors, Floyd, Otis, Gomer or Goober; and they spoke to each other on a daily basis.
Of course Mayberry was mythical and a long time ago, however it is emblematic of one of the newest and hottest ideas in architecture and city planning. Those concepts are the basis of what has been called ?New Urbanism? and it was a centerpiece on a conference on civil rights held recently in Mobile.
The International Association of Official Human Rights Agencies, a non-profit organization based in Washington, DC held their 2010 conference at the Battle House Hotel. The title of the program was ?The Human Rights Agenda- 2010 and Beyond?. I had the opportunity to attend one of the three days as a representative of MAPPSG.
The advance program indicated that the conference would address all forms of discrimination and promote equal treatment of all people regardless of race, disability, sexual preference, religion or ethnic background.
The day I attended was very heavy on talks by representatives of the NAACP and other traditional civil rights organizations. There was an ongoing workshop over the three days of the conference focused on fair lending in Housing, this seemed to be the primary goal along with making decisions on best practices in the political process. Resolutions were passed regarding:
  • Policies and Training to prevent police misconduct and excessive use of force.
  • Efforts to eliminate Zero Tolerance and discipline disparities.
  • Opposing Arizona?s law regarding illegal immigrants.
  • Supporting full implementation of ?ObamaCare?.
  • Ban the use of conviction records in employment decisions.
  • Recognizing the Legal Aid Services Corporation for defending low income families.
The fair housing workshop, in the time I attended, focused on discrimination against African-Americans and the LGBT community. (Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual and Transgender. I had to ask.)
After looking in on several of the workshops to locate discussion on the rights of people with disabilities, I was surprised to find that the most interesting and relevant portion was a luncheon speech by Stephen Glassman, the first openly gay person appointed to state wide office in Pennsylvania, and Jonathan Bernstein, formerly of the Anti-defamation league. The subject, to get back to Mayberry, was the new urbanism and it?s affect on people with disabilities.
The New Urbanism web site lists as the primary advantage of this design: Walkability
  • Most things within a 10-minute walk of home and work
  • Pedestrian friendly street design (buildings close to street; porches, windows & doors; tree-lined streets; on street parking; hidden parking lots; garages in rear lane; narrow, slow speed streets)
  • Pedestrian streets free of cars in special cases
  • Of course with some of us, rather than walkability it would be rollability!
The idea is that by returning to neighborhoods where homes, stores and offices are all close together, activities of daily living are possible without having to load up in a car, we would buy our groceries mere minutes from our own porch. Porches would be 30 inches off the ground and within 10 feet of the sidewalk. Look back at Mayberry after the news and notice how small the front yards are.
My question was ?how does a person in a wheelchair access a 30 inch high porch?. I did not get an answer before the allotted time was up. A ramp would need to be 30 feet long for a manual wheelchair and that might cramp a 10 foot deep front yard. Perhaps ObamaCare will provide us all with porch lifts?
These were committed and dedicated people who believe in the work they do. I came away with the opinion that the rights of people with disabilities will need to be promoted by those of us without other agendas. Our best advocates are likely to be?US!

January 2011 Meeting

It was good to see everyone. There has been so much sickness, The library has offered us a meeting room again this year so we need to encourage our fellow members to attend.
Education is one of our goals, so we are always interested in those medical conditions that involve nerve or muscle activity. Robbie Nabors, our speaker, talked to us about Dystonia, a movement disorder she experiences. It causes involuntary muscle contractions that force parts of the body into abnormal movements or positions. It can be debilitating, irritating and embarrassing, but it is NOT fatal. Treatment is designed to help the symptoms of spasms, pain and disturbed postures and functions. There is no cure. Various drugs are prescribed including Botox injections. Most people with Dystonia live a normal life. Ms Nabors is a positive, upbeat person who is a wife, mother and grandmother. We enjoyed her presentation.
Once again we had a nursing student to visit us. Misty Foster chose our group for a report to her clinical class. Chara Brown from Goodwill Easter Seals visited. She announced dates for Camp ASCCA - Apr 29-May l.
We drew valentines from a bag and read them aloud. Good fun. Those of you who stay home on meeting day miss out!

March 2011 Meeting

Our discussions today centered around a publication included in the March 6 Sunday paper- --Senior Resources. Info is good for 12 months. Articles described various programs and the benefits they offer seniors.
Although many of these services require certain criteria or qualifications in order to receive them, others are available to anyone. Wellness programs are sometimes covered by insurance. Two places in Mobile offer a low cost lunch:
  • Mobile Regional Senior Community Center-3201 Hillcrest- Mom-Fri 11:AM-l:30 PM-$5.80
  • Via -1717 Dauphin St Mon-Fri 11:30 AM -l:00 PM $6.00 or $7.00. Both open to public.
Patsy Adams explained the YELLOW DOT program which is now available in Baldwin and Escambia counties. Participants receive a Yellow Dot decal to place on rear window of vehicle. In event of a crash, this alerts first responders to look in glove compartment for medical info/id etc. Mobile hopes to soon offer this service.
Chara Brown visited. She is moving to a new location but can still be reached at 471-1581 or 433-4900 -new no. Chara told us about the services she is over and how she can help us because we are a support group sponsored by Goodwill Easter Seals..If you need to borrow wheelchair, walker etc you may keep it as long as needed, no charge. More info later.
Julie Ford shared Post-Polio Health newsletter. Good articles!
Attendance: Patsy Adams, Sylvia Bern, Chara Brown, Victoria Brown, Carmen Durtch, Julie Ford, Rus Ford, Carol Weller, Ed Weller.

Notes from the PPPSG Meetings

October 2010 Meeting Our October meeting was small but fun. Tina and Mary brought sausage balls which we all loved. They come from Crestview and we are surely glad they do. Mary told us of her trip on the train to go on a cruise to Alaska. She met a doctor from India who knew a good deal about post-polio. He spoke to Mary's husband who was amazed at the information and even diagnosed a lady on the train with post-polio. We are everywhere. It is great when we get to travel. I think of the effort it takes for us to handle travel. At home we can set up to deal with our everyday life, but when you start to think what you will need to take to travel, you begin to wonder if it is worth it. Getting away does help put life in prospective. Even our trips to camp can be rejuvenating.
There will be no November meeting this year, but our Christmas party will be December 4th which is the first Saturday in December. This party will be held at Jim & Shirley Neil?s home in Lillian, AL. It will be our usual Christmas with naughty Santa and please bring finger foods. We will be sending out the cards with instructions on how to get to the Neil?s in November.

Attending: George Dethlefs ~ Leigh Dethlefs ~ Nowlin Keener ~ Jim Neil ~ Shirley Neil ~ Clara Norsworthy ~ George Norsworthy ~ Tina Stanfield ~ Mary Warneck.

January 2011 Meeting

Our January meeting in Pensacola was great. We had 21 attend. It was wonderful. Our speaker was Danny Eddins from Pensacola Orthotic & Prosthetic Specialties. Many of us have worked with him before at Hanger, but now he has started a new company. We heard many people from our group that has used him in the past and he had great reviews from us. We, polio people, are hard to please and don't like changes, but Danny is aware of this and still gives his input on what is new and may work for us on a individual bases. It is a new company so he is still working to get Medicare and other insurances on board. He answered a lot of questions and told us of his vast experience with orthotics and bracing. As customer, I appreciate that he really knows what he is doing. There are several of us that won't use anyone else. He is that good. His new business is called Pensacola Orthotic & Prosthetic Specialties, 5855 Creek Station Dr, Pensacola, FL 32504 (850) 478-7676. Please give him a call or go to his office, if you have any questions.

Attending: Wayne Baggett ~ Juanita Campbell ~ Chereyl Cooper ~ George Dethlefs ~ Leigh Dethlefs ~ Danny Eddins ~ Theresa Inge ~ Pat Kaderly ~ Ron Kaderly ~ Nowlin Keener ~ Cliff Martin ~ Kay Martin ~ Kaye McKay ~ Bob Nail ~ Margret Nail ~ Clara Norsworthy ~ George Norsworthy ~ Bill Page ~ Gail Page ~ Gina Stanfield ~ Mary Warneck.

February 2011 Meeting

There was a small group for the February meeting. Our first topic was how great last months meeting was with Daniel Eddins from Pensacola Orthotic & Prosthetic Specialties. He answered some of our questions and would like to see anyone with specific problems with their braces.
We discussed the opportunity of going to Camp ASSCA this year. We need at least 12 people to go and hope to find out more of concerning taking a motor home for those that need a lot of backup. Will contact the camp to see and will let everyone know. We always have a great time and enjoy being together. Camp this year will be 4/29 through 5/01/2011.

Attending: George Dethlefs ~ Leigh Dethlefs ~ Pat Kaderly ~ Ron Kaderly ~ Kay McKay ~ Jim Neil ~ Shirley Neil ~ Clara Norsworthy ~ George Norsworthy ~ Tina Stanfield ~ Mary Warneck.

March 2011 Meeting

We had a very small number of friends at our March meeting. We had no set program, but discussed our up coming trip to camp. We feared that attendance would be a telling factor as far as us being able to go. We must have 12 to go and are keeping our fingers crossed that we will meet that goal. Kay Martin talked to us about the upcoming growing season. She and her husband have a great business in Jay that specializes in vegetables and fruit trees. We often get great tips from them for the garden.
Our group is now 11 years old. How fast time goes by. We know a lot more about post polio than we did and have educated many doctors. We are finding more experience with the medical field. Thank goodness! Hope to see everyone at our next group meeting. It will be our last one before going to camp.

Attendance: Leigh Dethlefs ~ Theresa Inge ~ Nowlin Keener ~ Kay Martin ~ Clara Norsworthy ~ George Norsworthy.
